True north strong and free
Well, that was easier than I expected. Actually, an easier application process for my American passport than for my Canadian one, surprisingly enough. And, barring any huge bureaucratic fiascos, it should come in the mail within a few weeks. Plenty of time before I leave. It still doesn't feel completely real, but at least the pieces are starting to fall into place.

Can't get them out of my mind
Finally time--tomorrow morning, that is--to get my butt in gear and head down to the US Consulate and get my passport application together. I really can't believe that I leave in just under 6 weeks. That's hardly any time at all! Six weeks ago I was... what was I doing? Oh, right. Same thing I'm doing now. Working and generally enjoying my laziness. Fantastic. Still, I'm realizing just how many things there are to fit into the next month. Coffees with friends, a trip to Edmonton, church in Banff... I may have to be more scheduled in the next month than I have been lately.Friday, July 15, 2005
Christmas bells are ringing
I think it's going to be that much easier (read: cheaper) to go to Chicago for Christmas than it will be to go home. I can take Amtrak, and while it may be a hell of a day on the train (about 20 hours), it's only about $200 for a round trip. Not bad. I highly doubt I could fly for that. Besides, if I take a laptop with lots of dvd's, plenty of books, a journal, and hope for an interesting seat companion, I can keep myself occupied, right? I mean, I did Eurail all over Europe, including some lengthy overnight stints. Not 20 hours, but it's not unmanageable, right? At any rate, it's not set in stone yet. I'm just looking into some options. I don't want to wait too long, or prices will be sky-high (that close to Christmas? Come on!), but I can't commit to any solid plans quite yet.
I guess this is my first real New-York-related post, isn't it? Everything else up to here has been test entries or other setup kinds of things. None of which I'm quite finished with, but I'm getting there.
